UN Commission on Sustainable Development

The Commission for Sustainable Development at UN Headquarters, NY

In May 2011, Sr Odile Coirier fmm, FI Advocacy Officer and other Franciscans attended the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in New York.  The Conference focused on the policies that address different issues including mining, waste management, chemicals, transport and the 10-year framework programmes for sustainable consumption and production (SCP).

“The two-week conference gave an overview of the challenges the world is facing, the small steps taken by the governments, the difficulties for the delegations to move forward and the remaining gap between developing and developed countries in achieving the goals,” reports Sr. Odile, who focuses environmental issues.

The attending non-governmental organisations called for the opportunity for a new environmental governance to tackle the challenges and evaluate the progress made since 1992 at the Earth Summit 2012 in Rio de Janeiro next June.
