Franciscans InternationalFI Urges Indonesian Government to Implement UPR Recommendations
FI and other NGOs share information and prepare joint submission for UPR of Indonesia
Torture; freedom of expression; human rights defenders; extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Indigenous Peoples, and women are issues of concern highlighted in the FI joint submission that need to be addressed during the Universal Periodic Review of Indonesia in May/June 2012.
Despite these issues being raised during the country’s UPR in 2008, national policy has not been reformed.
FI recommendations to the Government of Indonesia include: criminalise torture, investigate reports of perpetration and provide effective remedies to the victims; recognise freedom of expression and opinion as a universal human right; cease harassment and physical violence against human rights defenders and journalists in Papua, and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice; review law to ensure military perpetrators of crimes against civilians can be tried by independent and open civil courts; modify existing legislation and practices which discriminate against and override the rights of indigenous peoples; provide specialized social security and support services for indigenous Papuan women who experience violence and abuses.
