Franciscan Human Rights Defender visits FI Geneva

Sr. Namrata Joseph from India visited FI Geneva to take part in the 20th session of the Human Rights Council from the 18th to the 22nd of June. During her stay she took part in an FI side event at the UN as an expert speaker on the issue of human trafficking. A member of the Clarist Franciscan Missionaries of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Sr. Namrata works primarily with domestic workers, migrant workers and victims of trafficking. From 1995 to 2000, she worked with various NGOs while living among the Dalit community. Between 2004 and 2008, she worked as the Coordinator for the Gender and Development Programme of the Diocese of Simla Chandigarh, during which time she also took up issues related to female foeticice and HIV/AIDS.

She also worked as regional coordinator for the National Domestic Workers Movement for the cause of Domestic Workers, Child Domestic Workers and Migrant Workers and took up many cases related to trafficking, rape, murder, non-payment of salary and physical and sexual assault. In 2009, she went to Khandamal, Orissa, as a Legal Consultant soon after the massacre which took place there. Currently, she is a practicing lawyer and social worker in the slums of Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
